Navratri 2025 Day 5: On the fifth day of Navratri 2025, devotees worship Maa Skandamata, the mother of Lord Kartikeya (also known as Lord Skanda or Murugan). Worshipping Goddess Skandamata on Panchami brings blessings of wisdom, prosperity, and spiritual growth. She represents motherly love, compassion and protection, and is also believed to govern the planet Budha (Mercury).

Origin of Maa Skandamata

The name Skandamata comes from her role as the mother of Lord Skanda, who is revered as the commander of the divine army. When Goddess Parvati gave birth to Lord Skanda, she became known as Skandamata. Devotees believe that worshipping her not only pleases the Goddess but also grants the blessings of Lord Kartikeya.

Iconography of Goddess Skandamata

Maa Skandamata is portrayed riding a fierce lion while carrying her child, Lord Murugan, in her lap. She has four hands—two holding lotus flowers, one holding her son, and the other in Abhaya Mudra, blessing her devotees. Her serene white complexion is described as Shubhra, and she is often seen seated on a blooming lotus, earning her the name Padmasana.
