Kojagari Laxmi Puja: Significance

Kojagari Laxmi Puja, also called Sharad Purnima or Kaumudi Vrat, is celebrated with a night-long vigil or Jagarana. Devotees stay awake to honor Goddess Lakshmi, who is believed to visit homes asking, “Ko Jagriti?” (Who is awake?). Those who remain vigilant receive her blessings of wealth, prosperity, and happiness.

According to sacred texts, Sage Valakhilya described the importance of observing this fast on Shuklapaksha Purnima of Ashwin. Devotees offer coconut water, sweets, and play the traditional game of Chausar, which pleases the goddess. Even the story of Valit, a poor Brahmin, highlights how devotion during Kojagari Vrata transforms fortunes and brings abundance.

Kojagari Lakshmi Puja Rituals

  1. Preparations: Festivities begin early with home cleaning, decorating the puja area, and arranging the Lakshmi Puja thali with flowers, fruits, a diya, and lotus offerings. Devotees create Alpana, intricate white-and-red designs symbolizing Goddess Lakshmi’s arrival.
  2. Night Vigil (Jagarana): Families recite or listen to the Vrat Katha, sing devotional songs, and light diyas throughout the night. Staying awake during the full moon is believed to attract divine blessings for wealth, health, and overall prosperity.
  3. Offerings: Prasad like khichdi, payesh, halwa puri, coconut laddu, and seasonal fruits is offered to Goddess Lakshmi during aarti. Devotees also honor Chandra Dev, the Moon God, as moonlight is believed to enhance the auspiciousness of this night.
  4. Cultural Significance: Kojagari Lakshmi Puja fosters community bonding and celebrates spirituality, faith, and cultural heritage. It is a festival that combines devotion with joy, ensuring households are filled with hope, harmony, and abundance.
