Significance of Ahoi Ashtami
Ahoi Ashtami, also known as Ahoi Aathe, falls on the Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik, about eight days before Diwali and four days after Karwa Chauth. This vrat holds immense importance among mothers in North India, especially in states like Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
On this day, women pray to Ahoi Mata, the divine protector of children, seeking her blessings for the prosperity, health, and long life of their little ones. The festival is celebrated with faith, fasting, and devotion, symbolizing a mother’s unconditional love.

Ahoi Ashtami: Puja Vidhi and Fasting Method
On Ahoi Ashtami, mothers observe a strict fast from sunrise to the sighting of stars in the evening. Traditionally, this fast was nirjala (without water), though some may drink water during the day in modern times.
During the Ahoi Mata Puja, women draw or worship an image of Ahoi Mata on the wall, using geru (red clay) and silver ornaments. The legend of a mother and her seven sons is recited during the puja, symbolizing forgiveness and divine blessings. Offerings such as rice, roli, and milk are made to the goddess.
The fast is broken after sighting the stars or, in some cases, after seeing the moon, though the moon appears quite late on this day.
Legend Behind Ahoi Ashtami
According to the traditional vrat katha, once a mother accidentally harmed a lion cub while digging soil. The act brought misfortune, causing her seven sons to die one after another. On realizing her mistake, she repented and prayed to Ahoi Mata, who blessed her and restored her sons’ lives. Since then, women observe the Ahoi Ashtami fast seeking forgiveness and protection for their children.
Govardhana Radha Kunda Snan
On the same day, Govardhana Radha Kunda Snan is also considered highly auspicious. Devotees take a holy dip in the sacred waters of Radha Kunda to cleanse their sins and seek divine blessings.
Ahoi Ashtami 2025 is a festival that beautifully reflects the essence of motherhood, devotion, and faith. Through fasting and prayers, mothers express their deep love and spiritual connection with their children. Observing this vrat with sincerity is believed to bring prosperity, happiness, and good fortune to the family.
