Israel and the United States have both promised to retaliate against Tehran as fears of a wider war intensify.

On October 1, Iran unleashed its largest attack on Israel to date, firing at least 180 ballistic missiles, including its Fattah-2, most of which were reportedly intercepted by anti-missile defenses operated by Israel, the United States, and Jordan. With this, the Middle East edged closer to a long-feared retaliatory regional war to avenge the killing of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and other key leaders.

Israel and the United States have both promised to retaliate against Tehran as fears of a wider war intensify.

Since last night’s escalation of tension, several nations have alerted their citizens to avoid unnecessary travel or made provisions to evacuate them, flight operations have been disrupted and world leaders have reacted to the developments.

Meanwhile, seven Israeli soldiers have been killed in combat in south Lebanon, the Israeli military said in a statement on October 2.

Here is a quick look at the top events that have unfolded since:

UN chief barred from entering Israel: Israel's foreign minister announced that he was barring the United Nations secretary-general from entering Israel, accusing him of being biased against the country. Foreign Minister Israel Katz said he was declaring Antonio Guterres “persona non grata” and said he would be prevented from entering Israel.

US 'well-postured' against Iran: US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke to his Israeli counterpart hours after Iran's missile attack on Israel following Israel's military campaign in Lebanon, and said Washington was "well-postured" to defend its interests in the Middle East.

Gazan only known victim of Iran attack: A 38-year-old Gazan, the only known fatality in Iran's missile attack against Israel, was buried on October 2. Sameh Khadr Hassan Al-Asali had been staying in a Palestinian security forces compound in the occupied West Bank when he was killed by falling missile debris during Tuesday's attack.

India asks citizens to remain vigilant: India has advised its citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to Iran. In an advisory, the Ministry of External Affairs also urged the Indian nationals presently residing in Iran to remain vigilant and stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Tehran.

Kremlin calls for restraint in Middle East: The Kremlin on Wednesday said the situation in the Middle East was developing in an alarming direction and called on all sides to exercise restraint. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia had contacts with all sides in the region and said Moscow condemned any action that caused the death of civilians.

Airlines in the Gulf adjust routes: Several airlines operating in the Gulf have adjusted their flight routes to ensure passenger safety following Iran's attack on Israel. Neighbouring countries have closed their airspace and airline crews are navigating alternative routes to avoid the escalating conflict. For instance, Etihad Airways said it is rerouting several flights on Wednesday due to airspace restrictions in parts of the Middle East. Emirates cancelled all flights to and from Iraq (Basra and Baghdad), Iran, and Jordan till October 3. Qatar Airways also temporarily suspended flights to and from Iraq and Iran due to airspace closures.
