A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy was shot near the Victoria Gardens mall in Rancho Cucamonga, California, on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

According to NBC News, the shooting occurred around 12:40 p.m. on the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive, about 500 meters from North Main Street, where the shopping complex is located. The suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle, prompting a large police manhunt.

The chase ended when the motorcyclist crashed into another vehicle on the westbound 210 Freeway near Claremont as officers closed in, NBC News reported. The impact caused the motorcycle to flip, throwing the rider onto the roadway.

Aerial footage from local media showed emergency responders providing medical aid before the suspect was airlifted to a hospital. The individual’s condition has not yet been confirmed.

The deputy, a five-year veteran of the department, was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet released details on what led to the shooting or the suspect’s motive.
