Iroje KHM architects has built a distinctive all-white residence in a developing area of Incheon in South Korea. Aptly name the flying house, the dwelling has been designed for a young pilot and his family. The theme of aviation has been directly applied to the building’s architecture, with soaring roof canopies and dramatically ascending elevations. The firm sought to redefine traditional notions of Korean architecture with a completely contemporary residential program. Enclosed behind tall white walls, the home is organized around a centrally-positioned courtyard. From here, stairways lead over the roof of the structure, creating a climbable landscape that enables secluded outdoor living. Surrounding the courtyard at ground level, the entrance opens to a sunken living room, which in turn, leads to the home’s kitchen and dining areas. Opposite the lounge, a wide staircase that doubles up as an additional seating area ascends to the second floor, which includes the master bedroom, bathroom, and study. This level also includes the ‘rumaru’, an elevated pavilion that calmly surveys its surroundings. The uppermost storey contains two smaller bedrooms for the family’s children.
