In collaboration with COHED (the Center for Community Health and Development) 1+1>2 International Architecture JSC has developed the Bottle Seedling House, a multipurpose shelter for a rural community affected by HIV/AIDS. The site of the project, in the Do Son District of Hai Phong, Vietnam, is located next to a sea dyke, with an average of 12 typhoons each year. Due to this, the bottle house was designed to respond to natural disasters while protecting seedlings. Positioned at the foot of the dyke – where it receives maximum shelter from the wind, the shelter rests on a concrete pipe foundation, buried deep underground, which enhances cross bracing for the structure’s bamboo frame. Spanning an area of only 16 sq mtrs, the structure is composed of a sustainable bamboo frame, and a roof made of 3,000 plastic bottles.
