No respite, severe heatwave conditions in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana today

IMD has issued a red alert for Gurugram and Faridabad, while an orange alert has been issued for Delhi and Noida. Some of these areas could spells of rain and thunderstorm after June 20

On June 16, the Safdurjung observatory in New Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 44.9 degree Celsius, which was 6 degree Celsius above normal, according to IMD.

Residents of Delhi and the surrounding regions will have to bear with heatwave to severe heatwave conditions and a warm night on June 17, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.

Moreover, the weather agency has also issued a heatwave red alert for Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi.

Extreme heat conditions can lead to heatstroke and other related illnesses. The weather department has repeatedly stressed about staying hydrated and to avoid venturing out, especially in the afternoon.

The national forecaster has issued a red alert for Gurugram and Faridabad, while an orange alert has been issued for Noida. Some of these areas could get a breather with spells of rain and thunderstorms after June 20, IMD said.

The national capital will get a thunderstorm with rain on June 19 and a slight dip in maximum temperature.

Heatwave conditions will also prevail in most parts of Uttar Pradesh till June 18, while Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh can experience severe heatwave conditions on June 17. 

On June 16, the Safdurjung observatory in New Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 44.9 degrees Celsius, six degrees above normal, IMD said.

Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest maximum temperature in the country at 47.6 degrees Celsius on June 16.

While heat hinges north, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is being reported from the country's east and northeast regions. Isolated pockets of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall over the week, the weather department warned.

Widespread to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and gutsy wind is also expected in Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during the week.

In the western parts of the country, Konkan, Goa and central Maharashtra are set to receive rainfall in isolated regions between June 18 and June 21, the weather agency said.

Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, will have a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius with a generally cloudy sky with light rain throughout the week.

In the south, fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and gutsy wind has been forecast for areas including Karnataka, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu in the next five days.
