A family in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, recently faced an alarming shock when they were served an electricity bill amounting to Rs 3.9 lakh. The substantial bill has been attributed to a technical glitch by officials from the Kanpur Electricity Supply Company (Kesco).

Chandrashekhar, one of the members of the affected household, was taken aback when he saw the bill. His family, residing in a modest kutcha house with a tin roof, uses only a few basic electrical appliances: one cooler, one refrigerator, and two fans. Despite their minimal electricity usage, the bill had been accumulating for four to five months without their knowledge.

Chandrashekhar expressed his disbelief and frustration during an interview with India Today TV, highlighting the stark disparity between their usage and the exorbitant bill. "It is incomprehensible how our limited use of electricity could result in such a massive bill," he said.

Kesco media in-charge Srikant Rangeela acknowledged the issue, stating that the inflated bill was a result of a technical fault in their system. "Due to changes made to Kesco's server, some electricity meters developed a technical fault, leading to incorrect data registration," Rangeela told India Today.

He assured that the problem is being addressed and that Chandrashekhar's family will not be required to pay the erroneous amount. "The consumer's problem will be resolved soon," he added.

Due to intense heat in North India, several consumers have received inflated electricity bills, many not due to errors but just due to high consumption.

Days ago, a man in Delhi was left astounded upon receiving an electricity bill of Rs 30,280 from BSES Rajdhani for the month of June. He has four AC units at home.

Another man, the co-founder of a Gurugram-based firm, received a staggering Rs 45,491 electricity bill for two months just last week.
