The Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the largest of the seven emirates, sits by the Persian Gulf, where the sands of time seamlessly blend with modern marvels, creating a memorable experience for the visitor. The name Abu Dhabi translates to ‘the land of the gazelle' in Arabic. It is rooted in the legend that a young antelope guided a nomadic tribe to a wellspring of freshwater on an island with less than 300 palm frond huts, a handful of coral structures, and a formidable fort. This unassuming island settlement birthed the present-day, sophisticated, and soaring metropolis that proudly stands as the capital of the UAE.

After the consecration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, the focus has now turned to Abu Dhabi as the BAPS Hindu Mandir, the first traditional stone temple and the largest Hindu temple in West Asia, is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 14, 2024 which happens to be Basant Panchami. But quite apart from the temple, visiting this city is bound to unfold a rich tapestry of culture and heritage, painted with stunning natural vistas, beautiful beaches and captivating seascapes. All set against a backdrop of understated luxury. So if you have a day a half in Abu Dhabi, here are some things not to miss.

Begin your day with a sumptuous plate of balaleet. This traditional breakfast dish is a sweet and savoury combination and is guaranteed to fill both stomach and soul. Your adventure kicks off at the Zayed Museum, envisioned by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the United Arab Emirates. The museum features thermal towers shaped like falcon wings, paying homage to Sheikh Zayed's love for falconry. Each tower, like a feather, rises to 125 meters, housing galleries that chronicle the history and culture of this land. Explore the galleries and take a stroll through the landscape garden that mirrors the timeline of Sheikh Zayed's extraordinary life.

Next, head to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, a jewel in the crown of the city's cultural offerings. This universal museum, inaugurated in 2017, beckons you with its breathtaking architecture and a collection that spans the globe.

Indulge in some retail therapy and culinary delights. Head to Marina Mall or Yas Mall; these are retail havens where luxury and local flair converge. Refuel at Al Fanar, where Emirati cuisine takes centre stage. Try the national dish, khuzi, a slow-cooked roasted lamb or mutton on a bed of rice mixed with veggies and nuts. Be sure to try the legaimat, the crispy dough balls that are a local favourite dessert.

Your final day begins with a visit to the awe-inspiring Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a testament to Islamic architecture and the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Marvel at the intricate designs, harmonious colour palette, and the amalgamation of different Islamic architectural styles.

Explore the minarets, each representing different historical eras, and witness the grandeur of the world's largest chandeliers. You will be amazed to hear that the carpet in the main prayer hall was handcrafted by approximately 1,200 artisans and took two years to complete. Don’t miss the mother of all Emirati meals, machboos which might look like biryani but is quite different. It is usually made with chicken or lamb and rice flavoured with cardamom, cumin, cloves and other spices, and guaranteed to make your mouth water, and leave a lasting impression of this fascinating city.
