Heading for a trek is exciting and what’s more important is the planning done before.
The golden rule for trekking is to ‘PACK LIGHT’. This might seem easier said than done; it requires precise planning and clear thoughts. You should carry only the essentials; the ones without which you would not be able to complete your trek.Remember: ‘Even a pinch of salt extra spoils the taste.'
Here’s a rundown on some of the MOST important things that should not be missed while packing for your trek.
Backpack: Your backpack should be lightweight with padding on the shoulder straps. They should be comfortable as you would be carrying them throughout the trek. It should be strong, waterproof, should have sufficient space with plenty of pockets.
Shoes: Shoes are the soul of your trek, your companions. So, choose them wisely depending on the terrain you are to trek. If you already have a pair of hiking shoes, check if they work for your upcoming trek. And if you are buying new ones, do a bit of research and what would work the best and don’t forget to walk them for a month before a trek.
Sleeping bags and Inflatable pillows : When you go on a trek you can’t expect the luxury of hotels and beds, you will have to spend the nights in tents and will definitely need a sleeping bag. Buy or rent a sleeping bag depending on your usage and budget. And inflatable pillow will help you save up some space.
Plan your supplies: If you are planning your own group trek, carry supplies for your cooking like a vessel, knife, fire lighter, a plate for eating and a mug.
Make your own first aid kit: You never know what is in store for you up there. So, along with your regular first aid kit carry medicines for diarrhoea, cold, headache, nausea and some antibiotics that suit you.
Clothing: If you are heading to a cold place, you need to cloth yourself in layers. Carry a pair of thermals, sweatshirt, and a rainproof jacket. Also, don’t forget to add a set of extra clothes to change to. This will keep you dry during the night as well as give your trekking clothes some rest. You may also need woollen gloves and socks to keep you warm.
Torch: These are very useful and compulsory, as most often the nights are longer in high altitudes. They should be comfortable to hold and should be long lasting.
Sunscreen lotion/Cold cream: During the climb the sun rays are direct and harsh on the skin. Carry an SPF 50 or higher sunscreen lotion that will protect you from the high UV radiations. Cold creams are equally important as the skin tends to become dry and scaly. A cold cream will provide the necessary moisturising.
Water bottles: Carry two bottles that would fit your backpack easily. Access to water would be scarce so, drink required amount of water and keep refilling your bottles as much as possible. For all the hygiene conscious people out there, don’t forget to add water purifying tablets to your list.
Dry fruits and chocolates: These are great energy boosters that would help you keep going during the trek. Pop them up in your mouth when you feel your energy levels are low. Also, carry glucose powder or tablets as they are very handy.
Power banks: As most trails go through remote places, charging your electronics would get difficult. And also to save up on carrying all those extra batteries for camera or phones, it would be convenient to carry power backup in the form of power bank.
Besides packing, here are some important to-dos that should not be missed. Treat these as top priority as they are the base for any trek.
Health check-up: Do a basic medical check-up before the trek. You must be aware of your BP levels and breathing issues (if any). Also, many trekking groups ask for a medical and fitness certificate before the start of the trek.
Physical Fitness: Build your stamina and strength as you would face extreme conditions during the trek. This cannot be achieved overnight; you will have to work on it two-three months prior. Start with general walking and gradually move on to an inclined walking. Walking up and down the stairs regularly would help a great deal. Having said that ‘Trekking is not difficult if you know how to walk.'
Check the weather forecast: Knowing the weather conditions beforehand helps in planning for the trek. Depending on the conditions you can choose the type of clothes and pack accordingly.
