The Rohit Sharma-led Indian men’s cricket team emerged victorious at the World Cup 2023 semi-finals against New Zealand in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday and beat their rivals by 70 runs in a thrilling victory. The captain scored 47 from 29 deliveries and amidst the euphoria, an old tweet from Sharma, dating back to the 2011 World Cup, resurfaced.
“Really really disappointed of not being the part of the WC squad. I need to move on from here. But honestly it was a big setback. Any views!” Sharma, 36, had tweeted on January 31, 2011. And now, 12 years later, he is leading the team in the tournament.

One user wrote: “Rohit Sharma you will be lifting the WC trophy after 12 years.”

In the post-match presentation on Wednesday, Sharma reflected on the intense clash against New Zealand and was critical saying although the team was calm, they were “a bit sloppy on the field.”
Addressing the challenges faced during the game, he remarked, "I have played a lot of cricket here, any score on this ground, you cannot relax. Got to get the job done quickly and stay at it. We knew there would be pressure on us."
He also lauded the performances of the team, highlighting the contributions of emerging talents like Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill apart from Mohammad Shami who took a remarkable 7 wickets in the match.
Virat Kohli broke two records of Sachin Tendulkar, swinging away 50 ODI centuries and breaking the latter’s 2003 World Cup tally of 673 runs.
He also commended and Kohli's century saying, “Kohli did what he does, also got to his landmark century as well.”
India has qualified for the World Cup finals with no losses in the tournament.
