Sunday will mark a fortnight since Rohit Sharma-led India lost to Australia in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Reflecting on the loss, opening batter Shubman Gill said that the defeat to Australia was "heartbreaking", but it was important to move on and look ahead to forthcoming challenges.
"Definitely. It was very heartbreaking for all of us. But I think as people, athletes, if we have something to look forward to, we are always prepping for something. To be able to move on from anything, whether you have done well whether you have won a World Cup, lost a World Cup if you have this ability to move on, I think it always helps in life," Gill said while speaking at CNBC-TV18's "Indian Business Leader Awards" ceremony where he won the "Sports Leader of the Year" award.
The 24-year-old Punjab batter was later asked about the next record that he was looking to break and said he had no personal milestones in mind, but hoped that when India toured South Africa later this month, the team would be able to win their maiden Test series in the rainbow nation.
"There is no personal record that I am working towards right now. We are actually going to South Africa. India has not won a Test series in South Africa. So hopefully that is something that will change by the end of this year," he added.
When the right-handed batter was asked who he thought was the greatest of all time (GOAT) playe, he said, "That's a very tough one. I would say for me Sachin sir (Tendulkar) because he is the reason I started playing cricket."
After missing the opening two matches of the ODI World Cup, Gill made 354 runs in nine matches at an average of 44.25 and a best score of 92.
