A violent brawl erupted between two kabaddi teams at IIT Kanpur on Sunday, following which the institute banned the teams from further participation in the inter-college sports fest.

Footage being circulated widely online shows members of the two teams coming to blows and throwing chairs at each other. Several kabaddi players were filmed using plastic chairs to attack each other. Media reports suggested the two teams involved in the brawl were from Delhi’s Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT) and JC Bose University of Science and Technology (formerly YMCA UST).

The shocking incident occurred during the Udghosh 2023 intercollegiate sports festival.

One clip, shared on the microblogging platform X, captures the extent of the mayhem. One student is seen smashing a chair over another student’s head. A few seconds later, another student again throws a chair at somebody and runs – only to be pummelled by the same person he attacked. Women students were filmed trying to get away from the scene, which resembles a WWE match more than a college fest.

According to Careers 360, IIT Kanpur released a statement following the brawl. “It has come to our attention that an incident of altercation occurred between teams from two participating institutes during Udghosh ‘23, the annual sports festival at IIT Kanpur. This is strictly against the ethos of the festival and an improper showcase of sportsmanship. A strict action has already been taken in this regard and the concerning teams have been banned from further participation,” the institute said in an official statement.

“The concerned institutions have also been intimated and advised to take appropriate action at their end to avoid any such future incidents,” the statement added.
