A former student of IIT-Madras has been arrested once again for entering the women’s hostel at the institute, allegedly to meet the woman he wanted to date.
According to a Times of India report, Rohan Lal, 26, was arrested for trespassing into the women’s hostel at IIT-Madras disguised in a burqa. A native of Uttar Pradesh, Lal had graduated from IIT-M with a Masters in electrical engineering in 2023.
On Monday, students of the hostel spotted a person wearing a burqa wandering the fifth floor. They alerted the hostel’s woman security officer Merin, who in turn informed security personnel. Lal was arrested by Kotturpuram police on the basis of a complaint by S Prakash, the chief security officer of IIT-M.
This is not the first time that the 26-year-old has entered the institute’s women’s hostel, where male students are not allowed. Lal is a repeat offender who also trespassed into the hostel on February 16 and August 4.
According to the Times of India report, on Monday, he initially managed to give IIT security personnel the slip and disappeared. He was arrested by the police from Sriram Nagar Colony junction.
The IIT graduate had earlier been arrested on August 4. However, his counsel produced medical records to prove he is mentally ill, after which he was allowed to go with his parents. The judge gave him permission to go to Uttar Pradesh for treatment.
It is believed that the 26-year-old repeatedly tried to enter the hostel to meet a female student he wanted to date.
