Dolly Chaiwala had no idea he was meeting the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft when he served tea to Bill Gates. A day after a video of the tea seller serving a cup of kadak chai to Gates went viral on social media, the internet-famous tea seller from Nagpur told news agency ANI that he got to know the name of his famous customer much later.

“I had no idea at all about who he was. I just understood that he is a man from a foreign country and I should serve him tea, which I did,” Dolly Chaiwala told ANI.

“The next day, when I came back to Nagpur, I realised who I served tea to,” he added.

The tea seller said he was invited to Hyderabad but had no idea it was to make tea for Bill Gates. The Microsoft co-founder arrived in India a few days before Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s pre-wedding festivities, to which he has been invited. Gates has made several public appearances since he arrived in India, including a trip to IIT-Delhi and a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

His trip may have created a buzz, but there was at least one person who remained unaware of his fame – Dolly Chaiwala said that he and Gates did not interact at all.

“We did not speak at all, he was standing just beside me and I was busy with my work,” he explained.

But Gates evidently liked the cup of tea he was served. Asked how he reacted after drinking it, the tea seller said: “He said ‘Wow. Dolly ki chai.’”

Gates shared the video of his fleeting interaction with Dolly Chaiwala on Instagram, where it has collected a staggering 60 million views in a little over one day.
