Snake venom addiction, a lesser-known yet potent form of substance dependency, is making headlines after popular YouTuber Elvish Yadav was arrested for allegedly organising rave parties and providing the drug. He has been remanded to 14-day judicial custody on Sunday. Yadav, the winner of Bigg Boss OTT, faces a case under the Wildlife Act in Noida and after initially denying any wrongdoing, admitted to the charges, police said.

A snake smuggling racket was busted in November last year after police raided a banquet hall in Noida Sector 51. Five people, including four snake charmers, were arrested for allegedly supplying snake venom. Nine snakes including cobras were also recovered from them.

A forensic investigation revealed the use of venom of cobra and krait species in drugs supplied at the party. The arrested people named Yadav, 26, as their "supplier" leading to his arrest.

What is snake venom addiction?

Initially, individuals experience a euphoric rush, accompanied by heightened senses and a surge of energy after they administer the drug. However, this fleeting pleasure quickly gives way to a myriad of adverse effects.

Symptoms may include:

1. Physical Distress: Nausea, vomiting, and dizziness often plague addicts, as their bodies struggle to cope with the toxic effects of venom.

2. Tissue Damage: Repeated injections of venom can lead to severe tissue necrosis and scarring, resulting in long-term health complications.

3. Neurological Impairment: Addicts may suffer from neurological symptoms such as seizures, paralysis, and cognitive impairment.

4. Psychological Dependence: The relentless pursuit of the next venom fix engenders a deep psychological dependence, driving addicts into a vicious cycle of craving and consumption.

Challenges and Risks

Snake venom addiction poses unique challenges, stemming from the inherent dangers associated with handling and administering venom. These challenges include:

1. Health Risks: Addicts face the constant threat of severe allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, and even death due to venom toxicity.

2. Legal Implications: The possession and use of snake venom for non-medical purposes often contravene strict regulations.

3. Financial Drain: Sourcing and acquiring snake venom can impose a significant financial burden on addicts, leading to financial instability.

4. Stigmatisation: Due to its rarity and unconventional nature, snake venom addiction may elicit stigma and judgment from society, exacerbating the challenges faced by addicts seeking help.

Global Spread
While once confined to isolated pockets, snake venom addiction has stealthily spread across the globe, transcending geographical boundaries. Particularly prevalent in regions with high snake populations, such as Southeast Asia and parts of Africa, this addiction knows no bounds.
