Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were released from Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad on Monday, four days after the Allahabad High Court acquitted them of the murder of their daughter Aarushi Talwar and domestic help Hemraj in 2008.

After their acquittal on October 12, Dasna Jail authorities said that the release was delayed because they did not receive a copy of the court verdict on Friday. The Talwars’ lawyers reportedly received their copy of the order over the weekend.

The lawyers submitted the court order to the CBI special court in Ghaziabad, which convicted Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in 2013 and awarded them a life sentence. Subsequently, the CBI court passed the order on to the Dasna Jail authorities.

Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were behind bars since November 2013, having spent close to four years in Dasna jail before walking free. The dentist couple has reportedly decided to visit Dasna Jail every 15 days after their release to check on the inmates.

Jail authorities said that the Talwars had revived the dental department at the jail and checked inmates regularly while serving their sentence.

The Talwars were held guilty of murdering their only daughter, Aarushi Talwar, whose body was found in her Noida apartment on May 16, 2008.

A day later, their domestic help Hemraj, who was one of the prime suspects behind Aarushi’s murder and was assumed to be absconding, was also discovered dead in the apartment’s terrace.

In what became one of the most sensationalized cases of murder, the Talwars were convicted by the CBI special court in Ghaziabad in 2013 after a prolonged CBI investigation found them guilty. After the decision was challenged, the Allahabad High Court cleared them of all charges last week due to lack of evidence.
