In a story that sounds almost too bizarre for reality, a man in China has been sentenced to prison after successfully maintaining relationships with five women, all residing within the same housing complex. For over four years, the man—identified by the pseudonym Xiaojun—managed to keep his web of deception intact without his partners discovering each other, sparking a mix of astonishment and ridicule across Chinese social media.
Xiaojun, who hails from Jilin province in northeastern China, built his life on lies. Growing up in a financially disadvantaged family, he dropped out of secondary school and worked menial jobs, yet he presented himself as a “rich second-generation” heir to attract his eventual wife, Xiaojia.
To support his claims, he gave her counterfeit luxury gifts, purchased online, and concocted stories of his parents being successful businesspeople. His actual background was far humbler, with his mother working as a bathhouse attendant and his father taking up odd construction jobs, South China Morning Post reported.
Despite learning the truth about Xiaojun’s financial situation after becoming pregnant, Xiaojia decided against a divorce. Instead, she took charge of raising their child and eventually ousted Xiaojun from their home.
But Xiaojun’s double life was far from over. Merely a week after moving out, he met another woman, Xiaohong, through an online game and swiftly won her trust using the same fabricated story of wealth. Under the guise of preparing their “future home,” he convinced Xiaohong to lend him a staggering 140,000 yuan (approximately Rs 16 lakh), which he spent on maintaining his wealthy façade.
In a stunning twist, Xiaojun didn’t just move on; he moved into the same residential building as his estranged wife, living with Xiaohong after she, too, became pregnant. Over time, he pursued relationships with three other women in the same complex: university students Xiaomin and Xiaoxin, and nurse Xiaolan. Through this intricate deception, he extracted various sums from each woman, amassing around 280,000 yuan (Rs 31 lakh).
His downfall began when Xiaoxin, needing her money back for tuition fees, demanded repayment. In response, Xiaojun rented a luxury car and handed her a black plastic bag, claiming it held 100,000 yuan and asking her not to open it as it was for “important business.” But when he continued to ignore her messages, Xiaoxin eventually opened the bag, discovering it contained nothing but banknote practice bills. Enraged, she reported him to the police.
Xiaojun’s house of cards fell swiftly. As police officers began reaching out, Xiaojia and Xiaohong—coincidentally taking a stroll together with their children—realised the shocking truth: they had been sharing the same husband. Xiaojun was subsequently arrested, and his elaborate schemes came to light.
This extraordinary tale ended with the People’s Procuratorate of Fengman District in Jilin sentencing Xiaojun to nine years and six months in prison for fraud, bigamy, and theft. He was also fined 120,000 yuan (approximately Rs 13 lakh), with his illicit earnings returned to the victims.
