Bengaluru-based luggage company Mokobara has recently reacted to the backlash it has been receiving after a social media influencer pointed out that other e-commerce sites were selling almost identical bags for a fraction of the price. These bags are likely to be manufactured in China.
It sparked a discussion on whether Mokobara is "white labelling" Chinese bags and reselling them at inflated prices or the other sites were selling replicas, the company stated on X: "While the world debates the chicken or the egg, we’re focussed on what we do best - creating originals worth imitating." It announced the launch of its Moko x Naruto Series and offered a 10 percent "originality" discount on the code "WHITELABEL".
While the world debates the chicken or the egg, were focussed on what we do best - creating originals worth imitating. Dropping now: the Moko x Naruto Series - from one fan to another.
To our Moko fam, this ones for you. Use code WHITELABEL to get 10% off on originality! pic.twitter.com/lvQ0br0waf Mokobara (@my_mokobara) January 15, 2025
Mokobara's reaction received a mixed response from X users. Some loved it while others found it "disappointing".
Founded in 2019 by former Urban Ladder executives, Sangeet Agrawal and Navin Parwal, Mokobara sells laptop bags, suitcases and other luggage accessories that targets the mid-premium to premium customer cohort. The company competes with American Tourister, VIP, Samsonite, and several other traditional companies that have been in the space for several years.
The D2C luggage startup raised Rs 100 crore (around $12 million) in its Series B round in February 2024.
