The police commissioner of Bengaluru, B Dayananda, recently broke the tradition of cutting cakes on his birthday and opted to cut a watermelon instead. His attempt to choose a healthier alternative was lauded by social media users after a video of the celebration was shared on X.

"Setting a trend -- Dayananda IPS Bangalore Police Commissioner, cutting a watermelon on his birthday. 'Health and celebrations together top priority'," journalist and X user Nagarjun Dwarakanath captioned the video. The celebration was held over the last weekend.

In the clip, the Bengaluru top cop is seen blowing off a few candles stuck into the fruit before cutting it in half as his friends and well-wishers cheer him on.

'Volunteer beat will bridge gap between people and police, and help curb crimes'

Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B Dayananda made headlines last Saturday after the department announced that police-public beat system would be re-introduced to reduce and prevent house break-ins, vehicle theft, and robberies. The initiative is already in force in areas like Vijayanagar and Chandra Layout as a pilot project, The Hindu reported.

“The implementation of a volunteer beat requires public cooperation, so as to solve cases of robbery and burglary at night," he was quoted by The New Indian Express as saying.

He also asked jewellers to dial 112 if they notice anyone suspicious, either visiting their shops or lurking nearby. The top cop assured that action would be initiated against potential suspects.
