Pro-Kannada outfits have called for a Bengaluru Bandh from 6 am to 6 pm today to protest the Karnataka’s government decision to release Cauvery water into Tamil Nadu. The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) had recently instructed the Karnataka government to release 5,000 cusecs of river water into the neighbouring state.
Commuters are likely to get affected as driver unions, including those registered with apps, have decided to join the protest. Airport cabs are also expected to be affected. Tanveer Pasha, president of Ola Uber Driver's and Owner's Association, confirmed their participation as well.
Farmers' leader Kuruburu Shanthakumar appealed to schools, colleges, IT companies, and the film chamber to declare a holiday. Speaking to reporters at Freedom Park, he said that they will stage a protest march from Town Hall at 11 am to Mysuru Bank Circle.
What remains open?
Namma Metro services are being operated as usual by The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). Essential services such as hospitals, nursing homes, medical shops, government offices are also open.
What remains closed?
State-run Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will take a decision after assessing the law and order situation. However, bus services will be affected as the AITUC-backed KSRTC Staff & Workers Federation, a major union, has decided to participate in the bandh.
Several industries, hotels and restaurants, shopping malls, and other small local business establishments are expected to remain closed in solidarity.
Meanwhile, Kuruburu Shanthakumar has demanded a special assembly session from the state government as well.
