Europe agrees landmark AI regulation deal

Europe reached a provisional deal on landmark European Union rules governing the use of artificial intelligence including governments' use of AI in biometric surveillance and how to regulate AI systems such as ChatGPT.

  • With the political agreement, the EU moves toward becoming the first major world power to enact laws governing AI.
  • The two sides are set to hash out details in the coming days, which could change the shape of the final legislation.

Microsoft's OpenAI investment risks scrutiny from US, UK regulators

The US Federal Trade Commission is examining the nature of Microsoft Corp.’s investment in OpenAI Inc. and whether it may violate antitrust laws, according to a person familiar with the matter.

  • The inquiries are preliminary and the agency hasn’t opened a formal investigation, according to the person, who asked not to be named discussing a confidential matter.
  • The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority is also gathering information from stakeholders to determine whether the collaboration between the two firms threatens competition in the UK, home of Google’s AI research lab Deepmind.

Freshworks CEO Girish Mathrubootham to Sam Altman: Challenge accepted to build AI in India

Freshworks cofounder Girish Mathrubootham said that there is possibility to build AI from scratch in India and that he is challenging Sam Altman's earlier statement that India can try building AI like OpenAI but will eventually fail.

  • "Building AI is a possibility from India and the new-age startups in the AI space are very promising... I think we can surely say that Sam Altman's challenge is accepted," he said.
  • "AI Studio is a programme made for entrepreneurs who are very enthusiastic about building AI tools and models... More than anything they get access to 300+ network of startup founders and researchers to get support," Mathrubootham added.
