As India continued to slip down the ranks at the ‘Press Freedom Index’, Union External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar on Sunday expressed surprise with the ‘figure’ and dubbed the ranking system as a ‘mind game’. In an interactive session in Mysuru, Jaishankar said that there was something 'fundamentally wrong' in these studies since they have put Afghanistan press to be freer than India. "I thought India had the most uncontrollable press", he added. Watch to know more.
He said the Press Council of India (PCI), a statutory autonomous body, has been set up to preserve the freedom of the press and improve the standards of newspapers and news agencies in the country.
The ranking of India's neighbours, except that of Nepal, have also slid down, with the index placing Pakistan at 157th position, Sri Lanka 146th, Bangladesh 162nd and Maynmar at 176th position.
In a written reply to a question on India being placed at 142 out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index, compiled and published by the Reporters Without Borders this year, I&B Minister Anurag Thakur said the adoption of the methodology by the publisher of the report is "questionable and non-transparent".
Problems with global indices like Ease of Doing Business and the Global Hunger Index, where India didn't even place in the top 100 countries, boil down to methodology.
