On February 24, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the scheme in Uttar Pradesh by transferring the first tranche amount to over one crore farmers.
The agriculture ministry has prepared a cabinet note on "addressing income deficit syndrome of small and marginal farmers" proposing various steps, including a financial package and interest waiver for timely crop loan repayers, according to sources.

"The agencies desirous of purchasing farm produce will have to contact the farmers directly. It will ensure higher monetary returns to the farmers for their crops," Singh said here on Sunday.
Singh said in the Lok Sabha that the central government has introduced the 'Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana' (PMFBY) from Kharif 2016 to address risks associated with agriculture.

While there are constrains of land resources, the only option left with farmers is to increase the maize yield, which can be done by adopting advanced hybrids and best agronomic practices, the official said.

"In the year 2016, we started exporting coconut oil to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, the countries from where we were importing earlier. For the first time, desiccated coconut is being exported to the US and Europe in large quantities from India," Singh added.
A seven-point strategy including 'Per drop more crop' approach is being followed to achieve the goal, he said at the meeting of a Parliamentary Consultative Committee.

The country imports over 5 million tonnes of pulses and about 14.5 million tonnes of vegetable oils (comprising edible and non-edible oils) every year to meet domestic demand.

Foodgrain production is estimated to be all-time high at 273.38 million tonnes (MT) in the current 2016-17 crop year (July-June) on account of good rains after two years of drought, as against 251.57 MT last year.

Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said 107 lakh tons of fish was produced in the country in 2015-16 while for 2016-17, a target of 118 lakh tons of fish is fixed.
