Kojagiri Purnima 2025: Significance

Kojagiri Purnima is one of the most spiritually charged nights of the year. According to Hindu belief, Goddess Lakshmi walks the Earth asking, “Who is awake?” (Ko Jagarti?). Those who remain awake in devotion and prayer are said to receive her grace and abundance.

This day also holds astronomical importance, as it marks the night when the moon radiates all sixteen Kalas (divine attributes), believed to infuse the atmosphere with healing energy. Devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi and Chandra Dev for good fortune, peace, and health.

Legends and Stories of Kojagiri Purnima

According to Hindu scriptures, the significance of Kojagara Vrat is beautifully explained through divine tales. One well-known story tells of a poor Brahmin named Valit, who observed the Kojagiri Vrat with pure devotion. Impressed by his faith, Goddess Lakshmi blessed him with immense wealth and prosperity, changing his life forever.

Another tale speaks of a Bengali king and queen who lost their kingdom’s prosperity due to the idol of Goddess Alakshmi (the goddess of misfortune) being kept in their temple. Following divine advice, the queen observed the Kojagiri Vrata, which pleased Goddess Lakshmi and restored wealth and harmony to the kingdom.

These stories reinforce the belief that faith, devotion, and wakefulness during Sharad Purnima bring divine blessings.

Kojagiri Purnima 2025: Puja Vidhi and Rituals

On this auspicious night, devotees observe fasts and worship Goddess Lakshmi with devotion. Homes are cleaned and decorated with rangolis and lamps, inviting the goddess of wealth to bless the household.

A key ritual involves placing milk or kheer under the full moon. It is believed that the moonlight infuses the offering with medicinal and spiritual properties, making it sacred and healing. Devotees consume it after midnight as Prasad.

In many regions, especially in West Bengal, Odisha, and Assam, Kojagiri Purnima is celebrated as Lakshmi Puja or Lokkhi Puja with grandeur. In Gujarat and Maharashtra, people gather for Garba and Dandiya Raas, celebrating the night with joy, devotion, and music.

Kojagiri Purnima is not just a festival of rituals, it is a celebration of faith, patience, and gratitude. It teaches that when one remains spiritually awake and devoted, the light of Goddess Lakshmi enters their life, dispelling darkness and inviting abundance.
