A few hours after his arrest, Aam Aadmi Party leader Jitneder Singh Tomar resigned as Delhi Law Minister.

Tomar was earlier sent to four days of police custody by a court after Delhi Police arrested him on Tuesday morning for allegedly procuring fake law degree.

The arrest was made after the Bar Council of Delhi filed a criminal complaint against his alleged fake law degree. The Bar Council also suspended Tomar's licence.

Taking advantage of the sitaution, opposition parties attacked AAP and demanded Tomar's resignation. Senior Congress leader Ajay Maken said that Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and others have been raising issues of high standards in public life. "What happened to them now? Arvind Kejriwal should own up moral responsibility (for his law minister) and should resign. He should also ensure that the law minister also resigns," he added.

Expelled AAP leader Yogendra Yadav also demanded Tomar's resignation and said, "The matter is hanging for the last four months. It is a simple issue of someone who holds constitutional post whose credentials are suspect. He needs to come clean on it. It is not be to give verdict on it. If the degree is genuine then why not put the entire information in public domain."

Tomar, who was arrested from his office on Tuesday morning, claimed around 30-40 policemen along with an Additional Commissioner of Police came to his office and he had no other option but to go with them. "Around 30-40 policemen along with an Additional Commissioner of Police came to my office and said that they wanted to speak to me and would talk at my place. I have not been served any arrest warrant. I have not been given any details. They are not giving any details, they are harassing me. This is a political vendetta," Tomar said.
