Discontinued earlier this year, BMW has decided to relaunch the X4 SUV in India. The coupe-SUV is being brought in a single, performance-oriented xDrive M40i spec. This definitely means more power, and so much of tech. The X4 will be available in limited numbers, however, and since BMW is taking the completely built-up (CBU) route, there is a big price attached to it. (Image: BMW)

The exterior | Starting off with the exteriors, you will notice that it retains the raked rooftop from the previous X4 (no surprise there), but it is designed more in line with the X3 that the SUV is actually based on. The BMW M kidney grille is finished in gloss black as are its surrounds, headlamps are smoked and a nice aggressive looking bumper complete with a black skid plate makes up the design of the front fascia. In the profile, you see a set of 20-inch Jet Black M light alloy wheels complete with M sport brakes and red callipers. (Image: BMW)

For added contrast, the outside rear-view mirrors are also finished in black. Finally, at the rear, the sleep LED tail lamps and blacked out bumper and diffuser complete the X4’s sporty appearance. It's available in two elegant exterior colours – Black Sapphire and Brooklyn Grey. As far as the dimensions go, the X4 measures 4,752 mm in length, 1,938 mm in width and 1,621 mm in height with a wheelbase measuring 2,864 mm. (Image: BMW)

The performance | At the heart of the BMW X4 M40i lies a 3.0-litre in-line 6-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. This powerhouse is capable of generating 355 hp of maximum power and 500 Nm of peak torque. The engine is also mated to a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for better efficiency. Power generated by the entire system is then channelled to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic gearbox. BMW claims the X4 M40i can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and hit top speed of 250 km/h. This sprint time is identical to its sibling, the X3 M40i which, of course, is the standard body variant. (Image: BMW)
The X4 M40i also gets a range of driving modes, allowing you to tailor the vehicle's performance to your preferences and driving conditions. These modes include options like Comfort, Sport, and Eco, each of which adjusts parameters such as throttle response, steering weight, and suspension settings. For those seeking an even more engaging driving experience, the X4 M40i offers a Sport+ mode, which fine-tunes the vehicle for maximum performance. In this mode, the engine response sharpens, and the transmission holds gears longer, allowing for spirited driving on winding roads. Thanks to a combination of factors such as its rear-biased all-wheel-drive system, finely-tuned suspension, and more precise steering the X4 should feel well-balanced regardless of straight highway runs or tight corners. The interior | Step inside the X4 M40i, and you're greeted by BMW’s Vernasca Leather dashboard. The interior can be optioned in either Black or Tacora Red leather complemented by carbon fibre trim elements. Now, since this is the only trim available, the X4 comes with the M package as standard. This includes some aesthetic improvements such as unique pedals, leather-wrapped steering wheel and even the M-specific graphics on the driver’s display. (Image: BMW)

Front and centre, however, is the 12.3-inch infotainment system complete with BMW’s Operating System 7.0, the BMW Virtual Assistant, a premium Harman Kardon sound system, navigation functionality and wireless phone connectivity. Other features include a panoramic sunroof, reclining rear seats, ambient lighting, 3-zone climate control and wireless charging. It offers ample interior space and aside from comfortable seating for passengers, there is generous cargo space too. The rear seats can be folded down to expand the boot from 525 litres to 1,430 litres. (Image: BMW)

In addition to its performance and luxury features, the BMW X4 M40i is equipped with a range of safety features including an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). This includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, parking assistance, emergency braking and collision avoidance. Other safety systems include six airbags, attentiveness assistance, dynamic stability control, cornering brake control, electric parking brake, electronic immobiliser and crash sensor. (Image: BMW)
The pricing | Now, the BMW X4 xDrive M40i has been launched in India starting at Rs 96.20 lakh, ex-showroom. Interestingly, BMW also offers the X3 in the M40i guise starting at Rs 87.7 lakh. Aside from the Rs 8.5 lakh lower price point, the X3 also offers the same powertrain capable of delivering the same amount of performance but with added headroom for rear passengers as well as added cargo space. Competition from outside, however, will be in the form of the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 which should come to India in the near future. (Image: BMW)
