The NDA-led Central government on Sunday named former bureaucrat Amit Khare as the Secretary to new Vice President CP Radhakrishnan. An official order said, "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Amit Khare, IAS (Retd.), 1985 batch, Jharkhand Cadre, as Secretary to the Vice-President of India."
Khare, who has served the government in several pivotal roles, has been Advisor to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi since October 12, 2021, overseeing matters related to the social sector in the PMO. He was also a member of the core team behind the formulation and execution of the National Education Policy, 2020.
His appointment, according to the Department of Personnel and Training, is for a tenure of three years from the date he assumes charge. The order specifies that it will be on a contractual basis in the rank and pay of Secretary.
During his long and notable career in public service, Khare has worked both at the Centre and in the states. He joined the Government of India as Secretary, Information & Broadcasting, on May 31, 2018, later moving on to serve as Secretary, School Education and Literacy, and subsequently as Secretary, Higher Education.
Khare completed his graduation from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and went on to pursue a postgraduate degree in Business Administration from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. His name is also remembered for his crucial role in uncovering Bihar’s infamous ‘fodder scam.’
With decades of administrative experience, Khare’s appointment marks another important chapter in his career, now as Secretary to Vice President Radhakrishnan, for a fixed term of three years.
