President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday conferred Bharat Ratna on Bharatiya Janata Party stalwart and former deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani.
President Murmu visited Advani’s house and honoured him with Bharat Ratna on Sunday. PM Narendra Modi was also present at the BJP leader’s residence on the occasion.
This year, the government announced five Bharat Ratna awards, including four others to former prime ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan and two-time former Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur, posthumously.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on February 3, took to microblogging site X to announce that veteran BJP leader LK Advani and former deputy prime minister, will be conferred the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award.
"He is one of our times' most renowned politicians, and his contribution to India's progress has been immense. His life began at the grassroots and has culminated in his service to the nation as our Deputy Prime Minister", noted the prime minister. The prime minister expressed his delight that Advani will receive the accolade.
PM Modi praised the BJP's longest-serving president, who is credited with guiding the party's development through the 1990s, when it first came to power as the leader of coalition governments under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The prime minister praised Advani's parliamentary comments as exemplary and insightful.
