A second-year MBBS student from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College was found dead in her room at the Kamarhati ESI Hospital quarters on Friday night.
According to a Times of India report, the deceased, Ivy Prasad (20), was alone in her room when the incident occurred. Her mother, a doctor working at the same hospital, became concerned after repeated calls to her daughter went unanswered. She rushed to the quarters, broke open the door, and found Prasad hanging from the ceiling.
The deceased was immediately taken to the hospital, where she was declared dead.
No suicide note has been found, said police.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and started an investigation. No suicide note was found at the scene. Authorities have sent the body for a post-mortem at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital to determine the exact cause of death.
Prasad’s father, a senior official at a nationalised bank, is posted in Mumbai.
According to RG Kar officials, the deceased was usually quiet. She may have been struggling with depression, said police. Further inquiries are ongoing, while a case of unnatural death has also been filed.
This comes in the wake of the 2024 rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital, which resulted in countrywide outrage. Recently, a Sealdah court sentenced the accused, Sanjoy Roy, to life imprisonment. However, there are demands for him to be given the death penalty.
Doctors and the victim’s family have also called for fresh investigations, alleging that there may be other accused in the crime.
