An employee has alleged workplace harassment and sudden termination after applying for sick leave, sharing her account on Reddit’s “IndianWorkplace” community. Posting under the username “sharmisharmi”, she claimed her team leader humiliated her in a WhatsApp group, mocked her medical certificate as a “Rs 5 paper,” and later terminated her employment without issuing an official letter.
Screenshots uploaded by the employee show the team leader writing: “I can’t imagine how shameless and selfish people I have in my team… pathetic.” He accused her of “ghosting” for missing his call after midnight and criticised her leave record, alleging frequent emergency and planned leaves during festive weeks.
In another message, the boss wrote: “But when normal humans use to sleep, then sharing some 5 rupees medical documents and then going completely… this is not done.”
'Team leader calls employee after midnight'
The employee clarified that she sent her medical documents at 11.22 pm and went to bed. The team leader called at 12.06 am, and her sister-in-law answered, informing him she was asleep. “Despite this, my state-issued medical document was labelled ‘fake’ without any proof or investigation. I was only absent for three days due to genuine health issues,” she wrote.
No termination letter, no explanation
According to her, she has not received any official termination letter or explanation. “No update, no call, no explanation. It feels like they simply don’t want to give it. Overall, this has been an absolutely pathetic experience,” she added.
Reddit users urge legal action
The post triggered strong reactions online, with users calling the incident “clear harassment.” One comment advised: “If the document is valid and solid, you can file a labour case against them.” Others suggested escalating the matter to HR and keeping proof of chats for a formal complaint.
