As protests over the gruesome rape and murder of a 31-year-old Kolkata doctor entered the eighth day, several important developments pertaining to the investigation and the nationwide furore were reported through the day. Here are the top seven developments:

Senior doctors served notice over social post

Senior doctors Kunal Sarkar and Subarna Goswami appeared before the police on August 19 in connection with posts they shared on social media over the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Sarkar and Goswami were accused by the police of spreading misinformation and disclosing the identity of the postgraduate trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and killed while on duty at the hospital.

They reached the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lal Bazar leading a march of doctors.

BJP leader calls for Mamata Banerjee's resignation as CM

BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia has demanded Mamata Banerjee's resignation as West Bengal Chief Minister. “We want justice and the Chief Minister of West Bengal should resign...By her misdeeds, West Bengal CM has destroyed the dignity of a woman, a doctor who was serving society. She is the destroyer of the rule of law and evidence in this heinous crime which is vital to ensure that the accused get the punishment that they deserve,” Bhatia said.

TMC leader threatens those blaming Mamata

TMC Minister Udayan Guha has issued a warning against those blaming the Bengal CM and seeking her resignation over the rape and murder of the Kolkata doctor and said their fingers would be broken. “Those who are attacking Mamata Banerjee, pointing fingers at her, and demanding her resignation will never succeed. Those pointing fingers at Mamata Banerjee will be broken and crushed,” he was heard saying in a video that has gone viral.

Medics observe 'Kala Raksha Bandhan'

Junior doctors in Uttar Pradesh medical colleges and hospitals observed "Kala Raksha Bandhan" while elective services remained disrupted for the eighth consecutive day on Monday amid protests.

Father of victim hints at involvement of multiple persons

The father of the Kolkata doctor who was raped and murdered inside RG Kar hospital has alleged the involvement of more than one person in the macabre crime. He said in an interview that everybody he has spoken to has agreed with him on this.

An NDTV report quoted him as saying, “All the people we spoke to, even MBBS doctors. agreed that it was not possible for one person to do so much damage.”

Doctors provide free OPD services outside Nirman Bhawan

Doctors in Delhi provided outpatient services outside Nirman Bhawan today as their protests entered the eighth day. Resident doctors provided elective OPD services in around 36 specialties, including medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, ophthalmology, and orthopedics, to patients outside Nirman Bhawan on August 19, news agency PTI reported based on a statement issued by the AIIMS RDA.
