During an address to the Indian American community in Dallas, Texas, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed concerns about the lack of love, respect, and humility in Indian politics. This event marked Gandhi's first interaction with the Indian diaspora since assuming the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha in June.
Gandhi slammed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for its belief that India embodies a single idea, contrasting it with the Congress party’s view of India as a "multiplicity of ideas." He emphasised the importance of inclusivity, stating, "Very much like the United States, we believe everybody should be allowed to participate, dream, and be given space, regardless of their caste, language, religion, tradition, or history."
He described his mission as one of infusing Indian politics with values of love, respect, and humility. "Love to all human beings, not just those from one religion or community; respect for everyone trying to build India, not just the powerful but also the weakest; and humility, not in others but in oneself," Gandhi said.
Gandhi reflected on the recent Lok Sabha election, noting that the defeat of the BJP in securing a majority diminished the fear of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party. "Immediately after the election results, nobody in India was scared of the BJP or the Prime Minister," he observed. He also criticized the government's actions against the Constitution, asserting, "We are not going to accept an attack on our Constitution, our religion, or our states."
Addressing the ideological divide, Gandhi stressed that the Congress' vision for India includes participation from all backgrounds, highlighting his commitment to constitutional values and the protection of India's diverse traditions.
Gandhi also noted the important role of the Indian diaspora as a bridge between India and the United States, stating, "You have a very important role because the relationship between these two unions will determine the future of both countries."
