FAQs

Some common questions related to Aadhaar are answered below.

Do NRIs need to apply for Aadhaar card?

Aadhaar card is only for the residents of the country and an NRI is not entitled to one.

If a resident is an NRI and has a bank account in India but does not have an Aadhaar number, what will happen to his bank account?

NRIs need to disclose their non-resident status with proof to the bank. However, the Supreme Court has ruled that linking Aadhaar number to bank account is not mandatory.

How is Aadhaar different from other forms of identity issued by the government?

It is important to know the difference between Aadhaar and other IDs issued by the government of India. The Aadhaar number is basically a paperless online identity which is assigned to a resident to cover for an entire lifetime. This verification will be done with the help of authentication devices that connect the Central Identity Repository and return only a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ as a response to a basic query. It helps individuals benefit from social welfare schemes and ensure that fraudulent activities are reduced.

Is it compulsory for an individual to enrol for Aadhaar in order to file income tax returns or to apply for a PAN in India?

Yes, it is mandatory for every individual to quote their Aadhaar or Enrolment ID of the Aadhaar application form for the purpose of filing income tax returns and for making an application for PAN. This will be applicable to any individual who is eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number. It is important to note that this is only applicable to residents of the country and not to non-resident Indians. Any individual who has resided in India for a period of 182 days or more in the past 12 months immediately preceding the date of application for enrolment is considered to be a resident in the country and this requirement will be applicable to them. NRIs do not need to quote their Aadhaar on the income tax return or when applying for a PAN.

My service provider is not accepting an e-Aadhaar copy. What should I do?

Your e-Aadhaar will carry your name, address, photo, gender and date of birth. It has the same details that are present in the printed copy of Aadhaar. Your e-Aadhaar will also have the date of Aadhaar generation and the date of e-Aadhaar download. Downloaded e-Aadhaar is considered to be a valid and secure document and it should be treated at par with the printed version.

Can I give up my Aadhaar? What is the procedure for the same?

There is no policy to give up Aadhaar and there is no reason to give it up. However, you can secure your biometric authentication against misuse by simply locking or unlocking the biometrics through the Lock/ Unlock Biometrics function available on the official website of UIDAI.
