Calling for a comprehensive reform of the Indian education system, Congress leader has said that the nation needs an education system that reflects the rich diversity of the country and should not become a "privilege for a few", saying it is the very foundation of freedom.
Speaking during an interaction with students at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and the University of Chile, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha highlighted challenges facing education, social inclusivity, and independent thinking in India.
"When it comes to education, it begins with curiosity and the freedom to think openly and ask questions without any fear or constraints—political or social. Education must not become a privilege for a few because it is the very foundation of freedom. India needs an education system that fosters a scientific temper, encourages critical thinking, and reflects the rich diversity of our nation," Gandhi remarked.
The former Congress President criticised the current state of India’s education system, arguing that it has largely served the interests of the upper castes while neglecting the history, traditions, and contributions of the country’s middle and lower castes, as well as tribal communities.
"The idea of free thinking, the idea of being open, scientific, logical is under tremendous attack in India currently. That is something we want to defend," Gandhi remarked, adding that the erosion of scientific temper over the past decade must be addressed.
"India needs to build an alternative manufacturing system that thrives in a democratic setup. Thus, a partnership with Peru or the US could be the way forward," the Congress quoted Mr. Gandhi on its official X handle, while sharing a video of his conversation with students in South America.
Pointing at state's role in ensuring level playing field in the domain of education, Gandhi remarked: "The government has stepped back from education and allowed private players to dominate. While there is space for private institutions, the government must ensure high-quality, low-cost education for all. It should actively invest more in education rather than abdicating its responsibility," he said.
Meanwhile, the BJP launched an attack on the Congress MP, questioning the "real" purpose of his visits and expressing doubts about the "secrecy" he maintained during his visit to South America.
"Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, left for South America on September 26. It’s been over 15 days now, and apart from a few staged videos meant to divert attention from the real purpose of his visit, there’s complete silence," BJP IT cell chief, Amit Malviya, wrote on X.
