Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi on Sunday announced that the DNA sample of former chief minister Vijay Rupani matched when the procedure was carried out around 11.10 am. His body was handed over to his family and his last rites will be held in Rajkot.
Rupani was among the 241 victims of June 12 crash of the AI 171 plane crash in Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787 flight, which was bound for London's Gatwick airport, crashed soon after takeoff. A total of 242 people, including 230 passengers, 10 crew members and two pilots, were on board flight AI 171.
"Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani lost his life during the Air India crash in Ahmedabad on 12th June. Today, at around 11:10 AM, his DNA has matched. He worked for the people of the state for several years..." said Sanghvi addressing the media.
Earlier today, Dr Rajneesh Patel, additional superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, said the bodies of those whose DNA samples have been matched are being handed over to the families respectfully. A special team has been allocated for the family of each deceased. The team consists of a senior officer, a policeman and a professional counsellor.
Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel went to the residence of former CM Vijay Rupani and informed his family that his DNA matching has been done. CM has also informed the family that the state government will support them in the further proceedings of the last rites in Rajkot.
The bodies of 32 DNAs have been matched. 12 bodies have been handed over to their respective family members. We are waiting for others to come and collect the remains of their relatives, he told reporters. Earlier in the day , the Ahmedabad hospital authorities confirmed the death of four more students of BJ Medical College and their relatives due to which the death toll of the AI 171 plane crash rose to 250.
