AAP Seelampur MLA resigns ahead of Delhi Assembly polls, joins Congress

The development took place over a month after the MLA resigned from the post of president of minority cell of AAP

Rehman’s departure comes at a crucial time for the party with the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled to take place early next year

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Seelampur MLA Abdul Rehman resigned from the party’s primary membership ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi. Announcing the decision on X (formerly Twitter), Rehman alleged that the Arvind Kejriwal-led party ignored the rights of Muslims.

“Today I am resigning from the primary membership of Aam Aadmi Party. The party ignored the rights of Muslims by getting entangled in the politics of power, Arvind Kejriwal always did his politics by running away from the issues of the people. I will keep fighting for justice and rights,” he wrote.

Later, he joined the Congress party. "When AAP was formed - many things were there - like equality and taking all religions along, together. But, the party isn't doing that. When it was about Tahir Hussain - the party suspended him for six years. But, when it was about Naresh Balyan who was arrested by police on the charges of having a connection with gangsters, the party chief said nothing. When five youths were killed in Sambhal, the party chief said nothing. Hence I have resigned and joined Congress. Whatever responsibility the party will give to me, I'll do that wholeheartedly," he was quoted as saying by ANI.

The development took place over a month after Rehman resigned from the post of president of minority cell of AAP. Back then, he said he took the decision in view of the growing gap in views. “I hope that the party and my supporters will understand my step,” he wrote.

Rehman’s departure comes at a crucial time for the party with the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled to take place early next year.

The Delhi Assembly polls is likely to be held in or before February 2025, covering all 70 constituencies. These elections follow the previous Assembly polls held in February 2020, which resulted in the Aam Aadmi Party forming the government after securing 62 of the 70 seats.
