Sportsperson-turned BJP leader and Jamui MLA Shreyasi Singh was sworn in as a minister in Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s cabinet on Thursday, thus marking a significant milestone in her political journey.

Singh, who entered politics in 2020, won big and secured a decisive victory in the recently held Bihar Assembly elections. She defeated RJD candidate Shamshad Alam by more than 54,000 votes.

Her induction in the Bihar cabinet came as the NDA returned to power in Bihar, with Nitish Kumar becoming chief minister for the 10th time. The alliance secured 202 of the 243 Assembly seats, with the BJP emerging as the largest party at 89 seats, followed by JD(U) with 85.

Who is Shreyasi Singh?

Singh is a celebrated sportsperson and an Arjuna Award–winning shooter. She comes from a prominent political family. Her father, the late Union minister Digvijay Singh, and her mother, former MP Putul Kumari, both served in public life.

After joining the BJP in 2020, she won her debut election in Jamui, defeating RJD’s Vijay Prakash Yadav by 41,049 votes. Her even larger victory margin in 2025 has further strengthened the BJP’s foothold in the region.

Before entering politics, Singh built a distinguished career in sports. She won a Gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast in Australia and earlier earned a Silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She also represented India at the 2013 Trap Shooting World Cup in Acapulco, Mexico.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who had campaigned for her during the recent Bihar elections, praised her abilities, saying she had already won a “gold” for India and would now bring “gold” to Jamui through development. He had also added that Shreyasi would become the “voice of Jamui and Bihar".
