Broader markets up for 2nd day: Mid, smallcap stocks rise up to 7%; here are the top gainers

The Nifty Midcap 100 index jumped nearly 1% to 57,615 in the afternoon. The index has now recorded gains in five out of the six sessions in September so far.

    The shares of several midcap and smallcap companies surged on September 8, pushing the broader market indices sharply into the green.

    The Nifty Midcap 100 index jumped nearly 1 percent to 57,615 in the afternoon, extending gains for the second consecutive session. The index has now recorded gains in five out of the six sessions in September so far.

    On the midcap index, Bharat Forge shares were the top gainers. The shares of the company surged nearly 7 percent to trade at Rs 1,212 apiece. This comes as investors cheered its subsidiary's recent plan to buy a 950 -acre land parcel in Andhra Pradesh to develop a defence manufacturing complex.

    Ashok Leyland shares gained nearly 5 percent, as GST rate cuts boosted auto stocks. Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail shares rose more than 4 percent, while Sona BLW Precision Forgings and SAIL shares gained more than 3 percent.

    Ola Electric, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, HDFC AMC, Aditya Birla Capital and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) shares gained nearly 3 percent each. BHEL, Nykaa, UPL, Prestige Estates, Escorts Kubota, Muthoot Finance and other midcap stocks gained more than 2 percent each.

    Indus Towers, L&T Finance, Indian Bank, APL Apollo Tubes, BSE, SBI Card, Vodafone Idea, CONCOR and RVNL were among the other top gainers on the midcap index.

    The Nifty Smallcap index rose around 0.5 percent to 17,738 in the afternoon. The index has now recorded gains in five out of six sessions, and have extended gains for the second consecutive sessions.

    IDBI Bank shares were the top gainer on the on the index, rising more than 4 percent. Moneycontrol exclusively reported that Dubai's government-owned Emirates NBD, Prem Watsa's Fairfax India Holdings, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Oaktree Capital Management - who were cleared by the Reserve Bank of India as 'fit and proper' to bid for IDBI Bank are expected to participate in the financial bidding process.

    IIFL Finance, FirstCry-parent Brainbees Solutions and Kaynes Tech shares jumped more than 3 percent each, while Manappuram Finance, Laurus Labs and CDSL shares gained more than 2 percent each.

    IRCON, ITI, Angel One, Inox Wind, Tata Chemicals, CESC, PNB Housing Finance, Delhivery, Jupiter Wagons, and other smallcap stocks meanwhile rose over 1 percent each.
