There has been a significant increase of 86 percent in hiring within the construction and real estate sector between March 2023 and 2024, according to the data provided by job portal Indeed.

This surge in demand has also been accompanied by a 57 percent rise in the interest of job seekers, with Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai being the leading cities.

Indeed’s data reveals that Delhi (5.05 percent), Bangalore (4.68 percent), Mumbai (4.13 percent) are leading the way with maximum hiring in the construction sector. This could be driven by a strong business environment, uptick in warehousing and industrial needs, commercial housing requirements as migration rises, opening of manufacturing facilities, and more, the portal said.

However, smaller cities such as Ernakulum (2 percent), Kochi (1.5 percent), Lucknow (1.38 percent), and Calicut (1.25 percent) are among the top regions capturing job seeker interest. This trend could be attributed to affordable costs of living, or local opportunities that allow job seekers to work closer to their homes. Tier 2 & 3 cities with maximum job postings comprise Ernakulum, Calicut, Kochi.

The in-demand roles capturing the maximum share in job postings include engineers (17.18 percent), project leads and supervisors (8 percent), and architects (5 percent). In alignment with the demand, the job seeker interest also lies with engineers (21.31 percent), project leads and supervisors (9.33 percent), and architects (4.27 percent). As construction becomes more complex and technical, the industry is calling for more skilled professionals.

“The construction industry continues to be a key driver of economic growth presenting immense opportunities for skilled professionals to semi-skilled labor. The substantial uptick in hiring signals promising prospects for job seekers and employers alike while the significant rise in job seeker interest also reflects a robust momentum in the industry,” said Sashi Kumar, Head of Sales of Indeed India.

The job titles showcasing the biggest decline include planning engineer (25 percent), carpenter (13 percent), and joiner (6 percent).
