India, on June 9, met a peak power demand of 241 GW, said Union Minister for Power Manohar Lal Khattar, while ruling out any further surge in demand this summer.
"Demonstrating remarkable growth and resilience, India successfully met a peak power demand of 241 GW on June 9, 2025. This achievement underscores the nation's robust power infrastructure with zero peak shortage reported," Khattar said while talking to reporters on June 10.
The minister added that a further spike in power demand is unlikely as the surge was expected in the months of April and May. "Last year we saw the peak demand hit 250 GW in May. This year we projected a peak demand of 270 GW, but due to rains and thunderstorms the demand remained subdued. Since we are past the crucial months of April and May, it is unlikely that the demand would hit 270 GW this year. But, even if it does in the coming days, we are well prepared. Thermal power plants are well stocked with coal," Khattar said.

He further stated that in an unprecedented feat, India added its highest-ever generation capacity of 34 GW during 2024-25, with renewable energy accounting for 29.5 GW. The nation's total installed capacity now stands at 472.5 GW, up from 249 GW in 2014.
Khattar said India is also planning to spend around Rs 90,000 crore to set up undersea power transmission lines for transfer of electricity to Saudia Arabia and UAE. "This will widen the scope of our exports. As of now, we are exporting a little over 4000 MW electricity to neighbouring countries like Bangladesh," he added.
