The incredibly badass Donnie Yen who played the blind assassin Caine in the latest John Wick entry, ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ will be playing a lead role in a new spin-off film according to Lionsgate.
The spin-off is set to begin production in Hong Kong next year, and will continue the story arc of Caine following the events of ‘Chapter 4’.
As part of a new deal with Lionsgate and director Chad Stahelski to expand the John Wick universe, the film will be developed and steered by the franchise’ producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee (John Wick: Chapter 1-4) of Thunter Road (production company) alongside Stahelski under his 87Eleven Entertainment banner.
“From the moment Donnie Yen appeared on screen in 'John Wick: Chapter 4,' he captivated audiences and created an authentic, emotional connection that left an indelible mark and had fans asking for more. The John Wick universe that Chad, Basil, Erica, and Keanu have built offers a tapestry of fascinating characters brought to life by the most extraordinary performers, and we’re excited to have one of the world’s biggest superstars on board to continue this journey,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s char, Adam Fogelson in a statement of his.
The China born martial artist is one of the biggest names in the action industry. From his works on the fan favourite ‘Ip Man’ film series to the Disney live action ‘Mulan,’ Donnie is a certified superstar.
In a statement, Donnie Yen said, “Working on John Wick: Chapter 4 was an extraordinary experience. The reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil and Erica push themselves to create action, fights and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive and artistic, but also expressive of character, story and emotion. Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role.”
The untitled Caine feature is having its screenplay written by Robert Askins, known widely for his work on the Netflix series ‘The Umbrella Academy’.
‘Ballerina’ is set to be the next chapter in the ‘John Wick’ universe. It will star Ana de Armas (Knives Out) and will be released next summer in 2025 after being delayed.
