Amazon and Flipkart, two giants in e-commerce sphere in India, are set to lock horns yet again well before Diwali.
In its pre-Diwali sales, Flipkart is giving lucrative deals to its customers under its ‘Festive Dhamaka Days’ from October 5 to October 8. Amazon India, on the other hand, has begun its ‘Great Indian Festival’ sales from October 4 that ends on October 8.
Flipkart is giving ‘huge’ discounts on mobiles. Samsung Galaxy S7 which is priced at Rs 46,000 will be available at Rs 30,990. An extra discount of Rs 3,000 will be offered on exchange. However, the Samsung website quotes the price of the phone at Rs 39,400 (MRP Rs 43,400).
Samsung J3 Pro, priced at Rs 8,490 (again, Samsung website quotes the rate as Rs 7,990) will be offered at Rs 6,990. There are similar deals on mobiles from Motorola, Lenovo, Xiaomi and Panasonic. Moto Z which is currently available on the website at Rs 29,999, will be offered at Rs 19,999.
On IFB washing machines, the e-tailer is offering ‘No cost EMIs’. The details about other deals will be available only after the sale commences.
Amazon India Deals
Amazon India is offering 40 to 80 percent off on clothing and apparel. A discount of up to Rs 2,000 is offered on Mi smartphones. Whereas, up to 40 percent off is offered on other mobiles. The newly launched Honor 8 Pro is available at Rs 26,999 (Flipkart has a similar offer).
Apple MacBook Air is available at Rs 59,990, at a discount of 29 percent. Dell Vostro 3468 14-inch Laptop (7th Gen i3/4GB/1TB/Windows 10) is available at a discount of around Rs 4,000 (11 percent) at Rs 31,990.
Watches and hard disks are available at a discount of 40 percent. Samsung Gear S3 Frontier Smartwatch (Stainless Steel) is being offered at Rs 23,999 (16 percent off). Whereas, Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1TB portable hard drive is available at Rs 3,899 with a 51 percent discount.
Up to 40 percent off is on TV and appliances. A discount of up to 70 percent is given on home and kitchen products.
The company is also giving app only offers to its customers. These deals are available only through its official app. Up to 60 percent discount is being offered on computer accessories and games. Similarly, on earrings and other fashion jewellery, over 80 percent discount is offered.
Who will eat the larger pie?
During their Dussehra sales, there was stiff competition to lure a greater number of customers and outshine each other in sales. RedSeer Consulting, a Bengaluru-based research firm reported that Flipkart had led the 5-day festive sales with a 58 percent market share in the gross merchandise value of goods sold.
The RedSeer report further said that Amazon India saw a decline in market share during the annual festive sales worth USD 1.5 billion this month to 26 percent from last year’s share of about 32 percent. Consequently, a war of words ensued and the consulting firm was attacked by Amazon executives for presenting “poorly informed speculative reports.”
This round of battle for acquiring larger pie of the market is expected to be equally fierce. The real winner will eventually be the customer. However, the climax of the tussle would be when actual Diwali sales start.
