78% of Indian students prioritise university rankings for international education: Survey

A recent survey conducted by study abroad consultant Fateh Education reveals that a substantial 78 percent of Indian students aspiring to study abroad consider university rankings as a pivotal factor influencing their decisions. The survey underscores the paramount importance placed on institutional rankings, indicating a clear preference among students for universities with prestigious standings.

The strong preference for highly ranked institutions among Indian students looking to study abroad may suggest a limited familiarity with the local education systems of their chosen countries. The reliance on rankings as a primary guide implies that students may use these rankings as a proxy for assessing the quality and reputation of foreign universities.

The survey explored the multifaceted decision-making process for Indian students considering studying abroad. The results revealed that the second most important parameter, voted by 71 percent of the students, was tuition fees. Job opportunities were voted as a significant factor by 65 percent of the students. This aligns with the perception that India is a market that values affordability and is sensitive to price considerations.

The fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth parameters considered were the cost of living (53 percent), post-study work visa availability (51 percent), course rankings (49 percent), university location (41 percent), and part-time work opportunities (31 percent).

“Students need help making decisions that align with their personal strengths and professional aspirations while evaluating the state of the global market. While university rankings continue to be a good indicative parameter, more comprehensive support mechanisms by counsellors are necessary so that the student can evaluate how the university will enable their career objectives,” Kochar added.
