Injectable moisturisers, commonly referred to as injectable fillers or dermal fillers, have become popular cosmetic treatments aimed at rejuvenating the skin by adding volume, improving contours, and reducing wrinkles. These treatments involve the injection of various substances beneath the skin's surface to achieve a smoother, more youthful appearance. Hyaluronic acid, a natural component of the skin that retains moisture and enhances suppleness, is a primary ingredient in many injectable moisturisers. Additionally, collagen-stimulating substances and biostimulators are used to promote the production of collagen and elastin, further enhancing skin elasticity and firmness.

Types of injectable moisturisers

Injectable moisturisers come in different compositions tailored to address specific skin concerns and aesthetic goals according to Noida-based dermatologist Ishika Awasthi.

Hyaluronic acid fillers: Hyaluronic acid fillers are the most used type of injectable moisturisers. They are versatile and effective in treating fine lines, wrinkles, and adding volume to areas like the cheeks and lips. Hyaluronic acid binds with water molecules in the skin, providing hydration and plumping effect.

Collagen-stimulating fillers: These fillers stimulate the body's natural collagen production. Substances like poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) are used to gradually replace lost collagen, improving skin texture and volume over time. They are ideal for deeper wrinkles and areas needing significant volume restoration.

Biostimulatory fillers: Biostimulatory fillers, such as calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) and polycaprolactone (PCL), work by stimulating collagen and elastin production. They provide long-lasting results and are suitable for deeper facial folds and volume loss.

Application and procedure

The procedure for injectable moisturisers is performed by trained medical professionals in a clinical setting, says Awasthi.

Consultation and treatment planning

Before treatment, a consultation is conducted to assess the patient's goals, medical history, and suitability for the procedure. The provider discusses the expected outcomes, possible side effects, and aftercare instructions.

Injection technique: During the procedure, the chosen filler is injected into targeted areas using fine needles or cannulas. The injections are precise and may involve multiple entry points to achieve natural-looking results and minimise discomfort.

Post-treatment care: After the procedure, patients are advised on post-treatment care, which may include avoiding strenuous activities, applying ice packs to reduce swelling, and avoiding certain medications that could increase bruising risk.

Safety considerations: While injectable moisturisers are generally safe, there are important safety considerations to keep in mind.

Potential risks

Risks associated with injectable moisturisers include allergic reactions, infection, bruising, and rare complications like vascular occlusion. These risks can be minimised by choosing a qualified provider and adhering to proper injection techniques.

Choosing a qualified provider

It is crucial to undergo treatment with a licensed and experienced healthcare provider who follows strict hygiene standards and safety protocols. This reduces the risk of complications and ensures optimal results.

Results and maintenance

Duration of results: The duration of results varies depending on the type of filler used and individual factors. Hyaluronic acid fillers typically last 6 to 18 months, while collagen-stimulating fillers may provide results for up to 2 years or more.

Touch-up treatments: To maintain results, periodic touch-up treatments are recommended. These sessions allow for adjustments and replenishment of lost volume over time.
