Did you know that you can turn your house into an energy-efficient haven while lowering your energy bills and reducing your carbon footprint? If you want to contribute positively to a greener planet, start right at home by integrating some simple yet effective energy-saving strategies.

Sustainability is a necessity and having an energy-efficient home is one of the most impactful steps towards a greener future, says Sanjeev Agrawal, VP, Innovation, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) & Head of ESG at Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Ltd. “Apart from  reducing utility bills, an energy-conscious home contributes to a healthier environment and a more comfortable lifestyle. Also, as homeowners become increasingly aware of their carbon footprint, energy-efficient upgrades are taking center stage,” he says.

Use LED lighting: Lighting is an essential part of any home, and LED lights are a game-changer. They use up to 75 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last significantly longer. “Swapping out old bulbs for LEDs is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to lower energy consumption and brighten up your space with modern, efficient lighting,” Agrawal suggests.

Energy-efficient water heaters: Modern water heaters are designed to consume less energy while maintaining high performance, reducing both costs and environmental impact. “Switching to 5-star rated energy-efficient water heaters can help reduce energy consumption while providing consistent comfort. It’s a win-win for both your wallet and the environment,” says Agrawal.

Appliances for home: Purchasing home appliances with a 5-star rating makes a noticeable difference in both energy efficiency and comfort. “From air conditioners, refrigerators, or washing machines, choose appliances designed to operate optimally while conserving energy. You’ll feel the difference in your monthly bills,” he says.

Proper ventilation: Exhaust fans play a vital role in maintaining indoor air quality by creating negative pressure that pulls out hot, humid, or contaminated air. “In kitchens and bathrooms, where heat and moisture accumulate, a strategically placed exhaust fan ensures your home stays fresh and cool, reducing the load on air conditioners,” shares Agrawal.

Cooling your home: One often overlooked yet impactful upgrade is switching to fans powered by brushless direct current (BLDC) motors. These fans are highly energy-efficient, consuming significantly less electricity than traditional ceiling fans. “Energion fans represent contemporary efficiency, offering a cool breeze while helping to control your energy expenses by up to 60 percent,” says Agrawal, adding, “Many models also feature reverse functionality to circulate warm air during colder months, further reducing heating costs.”

Air cooling: Desert air coolers, working on the principle of evaporative cooling, are an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to air conditioners. “In dry regions, these coolers can reduce room temperature by 8-10°C while using only about 150-200 watts of electricity, a fraction of what an AC consumes,” Agrawal suggests.
