Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-day visit to France was marked by a series of programmes where he not only shared his insights with the global leaders, but also used fashion as a medium to promote Indian heritage.
During a ceremony paying homage to war soldiers, PM Modi layered a black jacket over his black and white kurta-pyjama, completing the look with a Himachali Topi. Traditionally made from locally sourced wool, these topis are known for their soft, breathable fabric and distinctive, colourful bands featuring intricate patterns and motifs that reflect the cultural identity of Himachal Pradesh.
Kangana Ranaut, who hails from the region, applauded PM Modi for promoting Himachali heritage. She shared his picture on Instagram with the caption, “Himachali Topi debuts in Paris.” In a recent post, the actress was also seen wearing a Himachali Topi along with traditional Pahadi attire, reinforcing her commitment to celebrating local fashion.
A few days ago, Kangana also posed in front of her Manali café, The Mountain Story, in a traditional Ladakhi Goncha - also known as Kos or Suleman. She shared her belief that India’s local attire surpasses international brands in beauty and urged people to promote traditional Indian clothing.
PM Modi also paid tribute to India’s rich textile heritage by donning a red Kashmiri Kani shawl during the India-France CEO Forum. Handwoven with intricate designs, Kani shawls are a testament to the remarkable skills of Kashmiri artisans. Each shawl, created using wooden spools called Kanis, can take years to complete, making it a rare and valuable piece of art. The shawls’ designs are inspired by the flora of Kashmir and incorporate weaving techniques influenced by Central Asian tribes and Persian tapestry traditions.
