Nutrients play a vital role in your dog's health and longevity. According to guidelines from AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) & FEDIAF (European Pet Food Industry Federation), dog food should contain essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other nutrients to support their specific dietary needs. These nutrients help maintain strong bones, muscles, a healthy coat, and overall well-being.
Reading dog food labels isn't just about understanding ingredients; it's about making informed decisions that promote your dog's health and longevity. Says Ishmeet Singh Chandiok, dog chef, canine nutritionist, and founder of Harley’s corner (ready-to-eat wet dog food brand), Bengaluru, “It's not just about trusting the label that claims '100 percent complete and balanced'. It is about knowing what to look for and what to avoid to make informed choices for your furry friend,”
He adds, “When you prioritise nutrient-rich, high-quality ingredients and avoid harmful additives, you ensure that your canine companion receives the best possible nutrition tailored to their personal needs,”
Chandiok lists the following tips you should keep in mind while choosing dog food:
High-quality proteins: The type and quality of proteins in dog food are crucial. While many brands boast high protein percentages, it's essential to consider the source and processing methods. For instance, proteins from red meats can provide more energy but might not suit all dogs. Chicken and fish are generally safer options, and pork can be beneficial for dogs with allergies.
Avoid fillers: Be cautious of dog foods containing fillers like corn, wheat, soy, and rice bran. These ingredients are often used to bulk up the food but may not offer sufficient nutritional value. Additionally, avoid artificial preservatives and animal-grade meats, which include parts like feet and intestines.
Meeting standards: In countries like India, where pet food regulations are lax, choosing brands that adhere to AAFCO and FEDIAF guidelines ensures higher quality and safety standards. Look for products that mention human-grade ingredients and avoid those labeled with "crude" nutrients.
Nutritional value: All reputed dog food manufacturers disclose nutritional values on their labels. Ensure the food meets your dog's specific life stage and health needs. For instance, puppies require higher protein and calcium levels, while senior dogs may benefit from a diet lower in fat and higher in fiber.
Watch out for calories: Calories are essential to monitor, especially for maintaining your dog's weight. Higher fat and carbohydrate content typically means more calories. Opt for dog foods with natural preservatives like tocopherols (vitamin E) or ascorbic acid (vitamin C), as they are safer alternatives compared to sodium-based or acidic preservatives.
Age-appropriate formula and feeding instructions: Different life stages require different nutritional needs. Ensure you choose dog food formulated for your dog's age—puppies, adults, seniors, and dogs with specific health conditions have varying dietary requirements. Follow feeding guidelines closely to prevent overfeeding or underfeeding.
