This guide explores various treatments and home remedies to address pigmentation, combining modern dermatological advances with traditional wisdom.

Types of pigmentation

Pigmentation occurs when melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour, is overproduced in certain areas. This can be triggered by several factors including sun exposure, hormonal changes, ageing, inflammation, and certain medications. The most common types of pigmentation include:

Melasma: Often linked to hormonal changes, particularly in women during pregnancy or while using birth control pills.

Turmeric: This spice contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory and skin-lightening properties. Create a mask by mixing turmeric powder with lemon juice and honey, apply to pigmented areas, and rinse off after 15 minutes.

Milk and honey: Lactic acid in milk helps exfoliate skin, while honey provides moisture. Mix equal parts and apply to pigmented areas, leaving it on for 20 minutes before rinsing off.
Preventing pigmentation

Prevention is always better than cure. Here are some tips to prevent the worsening of pigmentation:

Sun protection: Regular use of broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is crucial. Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses when outdoors.

Avoid picking at skin: Picking at acne, scabs, or other skin irritations can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Healthy diet: A diet rich in antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, can help protect the skin from damage. Include fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds in your diet.

Hydration: Keeping the skin well-hydrated can prevent the appearance of pigmentation. Drink plenty of water and use moisturisers suitable for your skin type.
